    The Times of the Chinese People and “The Dao De Jing of Chinese Culture

       一、 中华文化的悠远与深邃
       I.  The long-standing and deep Chinese culture
       中华文化源远流长,博大精深。儒、释、道是撑起中华传统文化大厦的三大支柱。儒家治世,道家治身,佛家治心;儒家入世,道家隐世,佛家出世。三家虽各有所重而相径庭,但能融合贯通,相济相补,构成彼此共存共荣的文化格局,千百年来对中国社会发展的方方面面产生了巨大而深刻的影响。中国历史上最鼎盛强大的时期,无一不是综合运用儒释道文化的结果——东汉“文景之治”,内用黄老,外示儒术;盛唐“贞观之治”,以儒为本,参以道法;清朝“康雍乾盛世”,内用禅佛,外示儒学。
      China has a long-standing, broad and profound traditional culture, with Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism as the three mainstreams. Confucianism initiates to govern the country, Taoism the human beings, and Buddhism the hearts, manifesting in that Confucianism goes into the society, Taoism secludes from the society, and Buddhism renounces the world. Though they totally differs from each other with their own cores, the three cultural streams manage to compromise and complement one another perfectly, therefore composing such a cultural pattern as co-existence and common prosperity, which shone a massive and profound influence on all aspects of the social development of China over thousands of years. Throughout the Chinese history, all the most Flourishing heydays attributed the success to a comprehensive application of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, examples in case are: “Wenjing Administration” in the East Han Dynasty applied the Way of the emperor Huang and Lao Tzu interiorly and Confucianism externally; “Zhenguan Administration” in prosperous Tang Dynasty made Confucianism as the principal and Taoism as the assistant; and “heyday of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Administration” applied the Way of Buddhism interiorly and Confucianism externally.
       对于儒释道三家,国学大师南怀谨先生有个生动比喻:儒家像粮店,天天要吃,不可或缺;佛家像百货商店,有钱无钱的人都可以进去逛逛;而道家则像药店,不生病可以不必理会,生病了就非亲自登门不可。因为道家的思想,包括了兵家、纵横家的思想,乃至天文、地理、医药等等无所不包,所以当一个国家民族生病时,就非去这个药店不可。纵观中国两千年的封建帝王史,每逢变乱时期,拨乱反正,都属道家思想之功;天下太平了,则用孔孟儒家的思想。可见,在很大程度上,中国传统文化的根,表面上是儒学,而骨子里是道家。
       As to the three schools of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, Mr. Nan Huaijin, master of the studies of Chinese national culture, has made a vivid metaphor like this: Confucianism is like a grain shop that is indispensable for daily life; Buddhism is like a department store where anyone, rich or poor, can go for a walk, while Taoism is like a drugstore that can be neglected when one is healthy, but must be visited in person when s/he is ill. The reason is, when a nation is “ill”, he has to turn to such an all-embracing Drugstore that includes the thoughts of military strategists in ancient China and Political Strategists (in the Warring State Period), as well as knowledge of astronomy, geography, and medicine and the like. Throughout the 20-decade feudalism history of China, it was Taoism that brought order out of chaos at every social upheaval time; and it was Confucianism in prevail in peace period. Thus we can tell that the root of Chinese traditional culture shows Confucianism in appearance while Taoism in actuality.

      《道德经》作为道家文化的经典之作,以深邃的智慧,诗一般的语言,探讨了宇宙形成、自然规律、治国修身等一系列重要问题。尤其是把自然规律看成是宇宙万物和人类世界的最高法则,认为人与自然的和谐比人与人的和谐还要崇高,为解决当前人类面临的一些问题提供了无穷的启迪。
      As the classic works of Taoism, “the Dao De Jing” explored, with profound wisdom and in poem words, such a series of key issues as the formation of the universe, natural laws, management of state affairs and the cultivation of one’s morality. In particular, it held natural law as the tiptop law of everything and human being within the universe, it held that the harmony between man and nature even loftier than that between persons, which offers limitless enlightenment to problems that human beings are facing.

      二、 现代文明的繁荣与困惑
       II. The prosperity and perplexity of modern civilization
       一百多年以前,西方文化迅速崛起——达尔文的《进化论》、凯恩斯的经济学、马克思的《资本论》思想影响和改变了整个世界,创造了现代文明的无比繁荣。西方文化的核心是竞争,适者生存。竞争带来了科学技术和商品经济爆炸性的发展。这种前所未有的物质文明极大地满足了人类的物质需求、改善了人类的生存条件、扩展了人类的见识视野。
      The western culture rose sharply more than a century ago, e.g., such deep thoughts as “Evolutionism” advanced by Darwin, Economics of Keynes, and “Capital” by Marx has influenced and changed the whole world by creating an incomparable prosperity of modern civilization. The core of western culture is competition, i.e., survival of the fittest. Such competition brought an explosive development of science and technology and commodity economy, resulting in an unprecedented material civilization that satisfied substance needs of mankind to the maximum extent, and improved their living condition and extended their knowledge and horizon.
       但是,飞速发展的科学技术更像一把“双刃剑”,一方面为创造人类的幸福提供了无比强大的动力;另一方面使人类掌握了可以毁灭地球上一切生命的能力。现代文明产生的负面效应越来越明显——爱滋病等新的世纪绝症出现,并日渐流行;严重的环境污染带来生态失衡、资源能源危机一触即发、自然灾害频繁发生、人口爆炸、社会老龄化;市场经济下,生存竞争压力日益激烈,失业人数剧增;面临知识信息爆炸时代,人们生活与工作节奏加快,身心过度紧张疲劳;出现信仰危机,人们普遍心灵空虚,迷失方向等等。人与自然、社会及自身心灵的关系已经如同强弩之末,处于危险的边缘。
       Every coin has two sides, so does the science and technology; it renders mankind the ability to destroy all lives on the earth as well as the mighty power to create welfare. The negative effect of modern civilization is increasingly evident: new incurable diseases in this century like AIDs become epidemic; severe environmental pollution has destroyed the ecological balance, accompanied by the resource and energy on the breakout verge, frequent occurrence of natural disasters, population explosion and aging society; under market-oriented economy, the competitive pressure of living is increasingly fierce manifesting in the increase of unemployment; facing the explosion age of knowledge information, people is overwhelmed by excess physical and mental fatigue due to the fast tempo both in life and work; The regional crisis makes people tortured by heart blank and disorientation, and so on. The relations between mankind and nature, society, and their own souls are just like an arrow at the end of its flight, being on the touch of danger.

    其实,近年的“911”恐怖事件、印度洋海啸、美国新奥尔良飓风,都是给人们一次次敲响的警钟。在无比强大的宇宙自然规律面前,人类是如此微不足道。一旦这些问题的发作,将给人类带来巨大损失,甚至是灭顶之灾,人类的一切文明成果都将化为乌有。至此,西方文化力不从心,失去了方向感。而中华文化的核心是和谐。和谐的优点是稳定和有序。因此,法国的大哲学家查尔丹说:解决二十一世纪人类的问题必须用中国的古文化。
       In fact, nature has sounded the alarm to human beings with “9.11 Terrorist Attack”, Indian Ocean tsunami, and hurricane in New Orleans in recent years. Man seems so inconsiderable when we face so powerful universal and natural law that any similar destructive attack would cost tremendous loss, even complete annihilation to mankind, and the human civilization would come to nothing. Under such circumstances, the strength of western culture has fell short of its desire and lost its direction while the core of Chinese culture is harmony whose two merits: stability and order. Therefore, Chardin, a French philosopher, said that, it must be Chinese ancient culture that could overcome the difficulties man is facing in 21st century.

       三、《道德经》中的“和”文化
       III. “Harmony” culture in “The Dao De Jing”
       《道德经》洋洋洒洒五千字,言简意赅,科学地揭示了自然界、人类社会发展变化的普遍规律,提出了“道”、“自然”、“无为”等著名的哲学概念,强调人的一切作为都要合 乎事物的本来面貌和变化规律,为后人认识事物、处理与事物的关系、规范自身行为,提供了明智的方法。
    With only compendious 5000 words in simplicity, “The Dao De Jing” reveals the common law hidden in the changes of nature and human society, puts forward such notable philosophy concepts as “the Way” “Nature” and “Inaction” etc, and stresses that all human behaviors must comply with and its original disciplines and changing rules, thus it provides a wise method for the offspring to know deal with the things and regulate their own behavior.

       1、 道 -  “人法地,地法天,天法道,道法自然”
       1. The Tao: “I am abstracted from the world, the world from nature, nature from the way, and the way from what is beneath abstraction.”
       老子思想中,最重要的命题就是“道”。道,一指宇宙万物产生和发展的总根源,这是老子哲学的核心;二指自然规律;三指人类社会的一种准则、法则。老子认为,道是先天地而存在的宇宙本源,天地万物无论如何变化,还要回到“道”。“域中有四大,而人居其一焉。人法地,地法天,天法道,道法自然”。——人与天地合而为三才,与道合而成四大。人依地而存在,地依天而存在,天依道而存在,道依它自己本来的样子而存在。道是至高无上的,是宇宙自然万物无法摆脱的,人的一切行为都应该遵循道。
       The most important thesis in Laotzu’s thought is “the Way”. First Way means the fundamental origin of birth and development of all creatures in the universe, which is the core of Laotzu philosophy; second, the natural law; third, a kind of rule and principle of mankind society. Laotzu held that Way is the origin of the universe that came into being before the earth and heaven, so whatever changes the creatures may have, they must return to the “Way”. “There are four limitless things, namely, the way is limitless, so nature is limitless, so the world is limitless, and so I am limitless. For I am abstracted from the world, the world from nature, nature from the way, and the way from what is beneath abstraction.” This indicates that people become one of the three gifts after integrating with the earth and heaven, and one of the four limitless things with Way. Man relies on earth, earth on heaven, heaven on Way, and Way on its original principle. Way is supreme, from which all creatures in the universe cannot get away from but only to comply with.

    2、 无为 - “无为而无不为”
        2. Inactivity: “Inaction and All action”
        遵循道,就是要无为。老子主张的政治哲学和行事方式的核心是“无为”——“无为而无不为”。无为,不是指什么都不做,而是指不做任何违反自然规律、有损道德规范、违反社会法则、有害众生的事情。无不为,是指只要不妄为,就没有什么事情做不成。前者是一种立身处世的态度和方法,后者是指不妄为所产生的效果。在今天炙热的全球竞争环境中,“无为”也许是一副清凉剂,提示任何国家内部统治者和对世界各国领导者,应该少一些利益,少一些争夺;告诫所有人,应该“少私寡欲”,对自然万物少一点自私自利之心,少一点欲望。只有这样,社会的进步发展、人类的繁荣文明才能得以延续。 To comply with Way, we need inaction. The core of the political philosophy and manners of behavior    contended by Laotzu is “inaction” out of “inaction and all action”. “Inaction” means not to do anything that disobeys natural law, damages the moral norm, infringes the social principle or does harm to the creatures, instead of doing nothing; whereas all action means that man could accomplish all except outrageous or presumptuous action. The former refers to an attitude and ways of conducting oneself in society and the latter is an effect on elimination of outrageous or presumptuous action. In the fierce global competition today, “inaction” may be a cooler suggesting that the internal governors of any country or leaders of all nations should stress less and less benefit and scramble, that all should purify the heart and diminish the desire, require less from the nature and all creatures. Only by doing so, can the advance and evolution of society and prosperity and civilization of human beings continue.

       3、 和谐——“万物负阴而抱阳,冲气以为和”
       3. Harmony: “All things leave behind them the Obscurity (out of which they have come), and go forward to embrace the Brightness (into which they have emerged), while they are harmonized by the Breath of Vacancy.”
       遵循道,自然无为,最终达到天人合一。老子最先提出了“和”文化,《道德经》中充满着和谐思想。“道生一,一生二,二生三,三生万物,万物负阴而抱阳,冲气以为和。”“和”就是对立平衡,相反相成的意思。只要没有人为的干预,自然力量自会形成它的平衡。这就是“和谐”。老子说,如果人类能与道、天地、大自然和谐相处、统一进退,就能“得一”,“天得一以清,地得一以宁,神得一以灵,谷得一以盈,万物得一以生,侯王得一以为天下正”。可见,只有当人们重视、追求和保持事物的均衡、和谐,达到人与人和谐、人与自然和谐、人与社会和谐的境界时,今天人类社会存在种种纷争与困惑也就迎刃而解了。
      Compliance with Way and inactivity to nature will help to achieve to the integrity of man and nature finally. It was Laotzu that first put forward “harmony” culture, and “The Dao De Jing” is full of such thought of harmony. The Tao produced One; One produced Two; Two produced Three; Three produced All things. All things leave behind them the Obscurity (out of which they have come), and go forward to embrace the Brightness (into which they have emerged), while they are harmonized by the Breath of Vacancy. Here, “harmony” means balance of opposites, being both opposite and complementary. In “harmony”, natural force will come to balance of itself if only there is no artificial intervention. Laotzu said that, if mankind could get along harmoniously and reach a unified advance with Way, heaven, earth, and nature, then the things which from of old have got the One (the Tao) are:Heaven which by it is bright and pure; Earth rendered thereby firm and sure; Spirits with powers by it supplied; Valleys kept full throughout their void all creatures which through it do live Princes and kings who from it get. Therefore, only by emphasizing pursuing and maintaining the balance and harmony of things, and by achieving the harmony between persons, between man and nature, and between people and society, can different kinds of disputes and puzzles be resolved.
      《道德经》包罗万象、深不可测。从“道”到“自然无为”到“和”的思想都是防止人与自然、人与人、人与社会之间矛盾冲突的一种大智慧,值得我们去深思。
        “The Dao De Jing” is all-embracing and fathomless. The “Way”, “inactivity to nature” and “harmony” are great wisdoms that can prevent any conflicts between man and nature, and between persons, and between people and society, they are worth pondering.

    四、“和”文化的智慧与启迪
       IV. The wisdom and enlightenment in “harmony” culture
        中华有“三和”文化,曰太和,讲宇宙的和谐,曰中和,讲身心的和谐,曰保和,讲保持着这种和谐。道家最先提出了和谐最原始的概念,曰太和,就是一个非常大的“和体”,就是大宇宙、大自然,名字是“和”,作用是“谐”,而人则置身其中,要去保持和维护这种平衡。因为,人从来就是自然界的一部分。人类向自然索取的越多,改造自然取得的成果越多,离自然就越远,人的自然本性也就丧失得愈多。
       There are “Three Harmonies” in Chinese culture, namely, the universal harmony means the harmony of universe, the intermediary harmony means both physical and mental harmony, and the harmony maintenance means the maintenance of such harmony. It was Wayist that first put forward the original concept of harmony in the “universal harmony”, which means the tremendous harmony carrier of great universe and great nature named as “unification” and effecting “harmony”. As part of nature, mankind has to sustain and maintain such kind of balance. The more mankind asks from nature and the more progress man makes by remolding nature, the further man is from nature and the less human nature remains.

        回顾世界500年大国崛起的历史经验,深刻反映了制度改革、技术进步对今天国家的影响,曾经的超级大国无疑都没有摆脱“生长、壮大、 消亡”的自然规律。原因只有一个,破坏了“和谐”。21世纪,中国和平崛起,重新树立起其大国形象;中国人的时代已经来临,中国经济的发展正在深刻地影响着全世界;中国也面临着和全世界其他国家一样的问题和困惑。——对环境、自然、资源的掠夺滥用,使我们失去了人与自然之和;利益竞争,人情冷漠,使我们失去了人与社会之和;个人主义的膨胀,物质欲望的沉迷,使我们失去了人与自身之和。在这样的时代背景之下,人们提出了构建和谐自然、和谐社会、和谐生命和可持续发展,重新回归到中华文化的本源——和谐。
       Looking back at the 5 centuries of historical experience of China’s grow-up, we feel deeply what the innovation of system reform and technology has brought to modern life, and even the historical super power failed to get rid of natural law of “growth, expansion and death” only for destruction of harmony. In 21st century, China has risen peacefully and reestablished its great power image; so far the age for Chinese people has arrived as a consequence of profound influence to the whole world by Chinese economic development. However, we are also facing the same threats and puzzles as other countries have: we are losing the harmony with nature as a result of plunder and abuse of our environment, nature and resources; we are losing the harmony with society as a consequence of competition for benefit and human indifference; we are losing the harmony with ourselves as a result of individualism expansion and indulgence in material desire. With such background of our times, it is brought forward that we should construct a harmonious nature, a harmonious society, a harmonious life and realize a sustainable development, so as to return to the harmony, the origin of Chinese culture.

       今天,《道德经》不仅是中国人的智慧,也是全人类的智慧。国内外已经掀起了一股学习《道德经》的热潮,希望从中寻找到一剂治疗世纪顽疾的良药。领悟和参透《道德经》中的深刻内涵,无疑对指导世界的和平与发展、中国的强大与崛起都具有强烈的现实意义和借鉴价值。
        Today, “The Dao De Jing” is not only the wisdom of the Chinese people but also that of our human beings. Both Chinese people and foreigners have unfolded a great upsurge of studying “The Dao De Jing” in the hope of seeking an effective therapy to the century sufferings. Therefore, to guide the world peace and development, and also the power and rising-up of China, the comprehension and penetration of the profound connotation of “The Dao De Jing” would yield a realistic meaning and reference value without any doubt.
